A Girl's Best Friend
After those few weeks I must admit, I did grow a little attached to Jordan and I was sorry to see her go. I was even more saddened to hear that because she was outdoors the whole time she developed some sort of skin rash.
Fast forward to this year. After my brother moved out, Tricia moved in and became our roommate. This cheered my heart because once again I would be able to see cute Jordan (and Tricia too). Of course, my "no dogs in the house" rule still stood and Jordan quickly made herself at home on my patio.
Now Tricia had Jordan since she was 18 or 19 and Jordan has been all over the country with Tricia. They were tight. Jordan was a constant, loyal, loving companion. But like everything else, Jordan was getting older. She was slowing down. She no longer had the same spring in her step. By the time Tricia and Jordan moved in with us Jordan was already sick with an inoperable tumor and she was slowly bleeding internally. The vet said that it wouldn't necessarily be painful for Jordan, but there wasn't much they could do. The nights were cold and we offered to break our rule and let Jordan sleep indoors at night. Jordan was getting weaker by the day.
You know, Tricia and Jordan moved in just over two weeks ago and in that short while Jordan really took a liking to me. Every time I would go outside she would get up and follow me around. Sometimes I would go to the front yard and she would come to the front and lie down and just watch whatever I was doing. The last few days though were different. Jordan was so weak she wouldn't stand up anymore. Her breathing became labored and even moving seemed like a chore. Instead she would just lie there and follow me around with her eyes.
This morning, when Tricia went outside to check on Jordan, she noticed that Jordan had thrown up again. After much consideration Tricia made one of the hardest decisions of her life. She decided that it was time to let Jordan go. She decided to put Jordan down.
There's a reason that dogs are known as man's best friend. Dogs are loyal. They love unconditionally. They are always there when you're feeling down. They cheer you up. Jordan was no different.
After spending all morning outside with Jordan, Tricia and Keao drove together to the vet. I wasn't there, but Keao told me that everything went about as good as they could. Tricia mentioned how God had his hand in it. You see, the vet didn't have to put Jordan to sleep. Jordan quietly passed away in the vet's office. Tricia got to spend an entire morning with Jordan and she got to be there when she passed away. Of course, I'm sure Tricia would rather have Jordan back, but if she had to go, this was probably the best anyone could have hoped for.

Maui, Oh Maui
The entrance to our heavenly meal
Keao was so hungry she couldn't even look at the menu (or camera)
She opted for a peanut butter cup shake which was so huge they brought out the extra in another cup!
I opted for the sliders and rings (which were perfect even though there were only five of them)
The Maui Ocean Center is an aquarium that sits right next to Maalaea Harbor. Probably the thing it's most famous for is its shark tunnel. That is, there's a large tunnel in the middle of the tank so you can watch the sharks and rays swim above you. There are also a lot of other fish and mammal displays as well.
The large sign beckons you to come on in
One of the first tanks had a bunch of flounders which was cool because they have both eyes on the same side of their heads
This is what they look like from above
This is me holding the water back (Moses style!)
Although it's not a petting zoo, the shark lagoon is a popular draw
These are called hammerheads for very obvious reasons
Keao and Kelii before the fun began
One of the interactive displays in the center focuses on whalesongs. Keao, ever the scientist, wanted to see if she could one day communicate with the huge beasts. How'd she do? I'll just let the video explain.
Pretty good eh? After that stunning display of talent, we saw more sharks and a few rays.
These guys had their own special tank
This is a ray swimming away
If you were being eaten by a ray, this would be the last thing you would see
Hula Cookies and Ice Cream makes an ice cream sandwich with what else but their own cookies and ice cream
Keao and I split a scoop of chocolate between two chocolate chip cookies
Notice it's "local and Hawaiian" style food
Who do you think they modeled the wall art after?
Our Hawaiian plate was definitely enough for two
See how cold they look?
The Kau Kau Four Court
Fernando's from a distance
I had the alpastor sandwich
After all that we finished up and headed back to Oahu. It was a short trip, but a fun-filled memorable one nonetheless.

Top 10,000 Ain't Bad
Keao and I ran (and I use the verb rather loosely) the race a few years ago and a bunch of our friends wanted to run it as well so we decided to put a group together.
Some of us brave the cold, dark morning
Keao and I inching ever closer to the start line (note we're still smiling)
Dural's confused because that couple behind him are running "three-legged" style
We're almost to the start line
Keao had been running and working out for a few months so understandably she's in much better shape than I am. My goal was to jog as far as I can and then jog/walk the rest of the way. We decided that we would try to jog two miles first (as I have not really been training too hard). I'm happy to say that I did make it the first two miles and even did one more! Who would've thought that I could jog three straight miles?
Of course the first five miles are fairly easy because it's so flat. The second half of the run is slightly more difficult because there are inclines and declines. Plus, by the time you exit under the airport viaduct the sun is now burning harshly and brightly.
Can you see Aloha Stadium in the background (hint: it's to the right of those white buildings)?
Still smiling just a little more tired and sweaty!
I'm still smiling on the outside, but inside I'm exhausted
The different colors indicate where you think you will finish (yellow is faster than green which is faster than pink)
Despite making some of the people in this group wait an hour for us to finish, we're all still smiling!
If you're interested in running with us next year you can sign up at www.greataloharun.com. Hope to see you there!
Jumbo Deal for Jumbo Men
There it is in all its glory (well, the drink was extra)
No use in playing around, JC lined his two "deals" up
If one grease filled taco isn't enough there are three more waiting for you
If that face doesn't say it all I don't know what will
JC about half way through and still smiling
Almost done, just a few more fries left
And we're done...just gotta clean up the mess
1 Jumbo Deal eaten: Scott, Mike and Jasen
2 Jumbo Deals eaten: Mikey, JC, John-John and Dural
Something healthy like a salad: Liz
I think next time we do this we'll need to add in a speed factor. Join us next time as we see who can eat a dozen Taco Bell tacos the quickest!

Survival of the Fittest
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the most athletic person in the world, but I do enjoy playing different sports and hanging out. This past Saturday a bunch of us went to Maunawili Valley Park for a night of active sports and a BBQ. We started playing Ultimate Frisbee which transitioned to Kickball then Flag Football, Basketball and then Sham Battle.
Of all the games we played that day the Flag Football was the most intense. We had both men and women playing and from time to time we even had a ringer of the canine variety.
Despite brandishing the red flags Cannon was really on his own team
The great thing about Flag Football is that anyone can play. It doesn't matter if you're male or female. In fact many times it's more advantageous to be a woman because sometimes they're quicker and can get open more. Case in point, Jennifer may have caught the most balls on Saturday. She definitely caught everything that came her way.
This was common sight all afternoon
Of course that's not to say that the action wasn't fast and intense. It was quite the opposite. Both teams wanted to win badly and they played their hearts out. Everyone played with heart and good sportsmanship.
He may have dropped the ball and been out of bounds, but Paul showed a lot of heart that day
This wasn't nearly as bad as it looked
This was
It's all about getting the flag no matter what
Or not
Of course it wasn't all sports all night long. We did bring a grill and cooked up some steaks and burgers. Overall it was an excellent night filled with good weather, great food and fantastic friends. Make sure you make plans to come out to our next sports night!
